Jack came over from Romania after surviving life as a street dog, but his journey didn't get easier when he arrived. After being placed in a home where the resident dog rejected him, he was moved into a rehabilitation facility where, for two years, nothing really changed.
By the time Jack came into my care a year ago, he was shut down. Depressed, hand shy, fearful of new things, and lacking even the most basic foundations. He didn't know his name, wasn't comfortable in a harness, avoided grooming and the muzzle, and would cower if objects were lifted above him. It was clear Jack had learned to suppress himself; he'd lost both his voice and his choice.
So we didn't start with obedience. We started with him.
By meeting his emotional and physical needs first, Jack began to come back to life. The bond he's built since then has been incredible to watch; and more importantly, that trust is now transferring to others. He's learning the world is safe, that people can listen, and that he's allowed to explore, make choices, and enjoy life.
Today, Jack is a completely different dog. Still sensitive, still thoughtful; but now curious, engaged, and quietly confident in ways that really matter.
Who Jack Is Now
A big, gentle, sensitive lad with a huge heart.
* Medium energy - enjoys activity but also knows how to settle
* Very food motivated - loves training, enrichment, and interaction
* Affectionate once he trusts - think leaning in, full-body cuddles, and rolling over for belly rubs
* Expressive and easy to read - he tells you how he's feeling if you're willing to listen
* Loves sniffing, exploring, and engaging with his handler
* Fantastic recall (will need building with a new handler)
* Walks beautifully on lead when his needs are met
* Comfortable around traffic and everyday household items
What Jack Finds Difficult
Jack is doing brilliantly, but he still needs the right environment to keep thriving.
* Finds crowds and busy environments challenging
* Sensitive to social pressure from people
* Can become shy if approached too quickly or intensely
* Needs support with grooming around his back end (training protocols in place)
* Needs clear management around food (especially human food and feeding routines)
* Has spent a long time in kennels, so home life will be an adjustment
Dog & Social Skills
* Neutral and sensible around dogs in general
* Can walk past unfamiliar dogs calmly
* Dog selective in closer interactions - would suit a well-matched, calm female
* Greets people nicely when given space and time
Jack's Wishlist (Non-Negotiables)
Quiet, rural or low-traffic home environment
Experienced dog owner (rescue experience preferred)
Willing to spend time learning his handling and training before adoption (minimum 2 days)
Committed to continuing his training and building his confidence
Secure garden
Able to manage feeding routines appropriately (separate, undisturbed feeding space)
Nice to Have (But Not Essential)
A calm, well-matched female dog companion
Active lifestyle - Jack loves a good run and has even been introduced to running alongside a bike
Interest in training and enrichment (he thrives when his brain is engaged)
The Reality of Jack
Jack isn't a 'plug and play' dog. He's a dog who has been let down, adapted to survive, and is now learning how to live again.
What he needs is someone who respects that journey.
In return, you get a dog who:
* Builds a real bond
* Tries his heart out
* Finds joy in the small things
* And will absolutely choose you, every day, once you've earned it
Ongoing Support
As with all dogs from Second Chance Dog Rescue, full rescue backup and behavioural support is provided. You won't be doing this alone.
